Picture framing

7 otázek

How do I measure my artwork correctly?

Measure the artwork itself without any existing frame – width and height in centimetres, ideally on a flat surface. Also measure both diagonals: if they differ, the artwork is not perfectly rectangular but slightly skewed. This is common with oil paintings on canvas and older pictures, and we then need to adapt the frame. We make the frame with a little clearance so the artwork is not squeezed. If you are not sure, bring the artwork to our studio and we will measure it for you.

Do I have to come in person, or can I order framing online?

Both. In the calculator on our website you choose the moulding, mat and glass, see a preview and the price, and can order straight away. You then bring the artwork to the studio or send it to us. If you would like to see and touch the mouldings in person, you are very welcome at our studio in Vrchlabí.

How do I send you my artwork?

Send flat artwork up to 70 × 50 cm in a rigid envelope, rollable artwork (poster, print) in a tube up to 120 cm, and larger or non-rollable artwork in a box. You can order the packaging and delivery to us directly in the calculator. We will return the finished frame by insured courier, or you can pick it up at the studio.

How long does framing take?

We order mouldings from the manufacturer to measure, so framing usually takes up to 10 days from receiving your artwork. The calculator shows the exact lead time for the selected moulding.

Which glass should I choose?

Clear glass is a reliable basic option. For a bright room or opposite a window we recommend glass with reduced reflections. UV glass protects originals, photos and signatures. The best choice is museum glass, which is almost invisible. Paintings on canvas are not glazed.

Why add a mat to the artwork?

A mat makes the artwork look larger, gives it calm and, above all, separates it from the glass. The artwork does not touch the glass, does not stick to it and can "breathe" better.

What can you frame?

Paintings, photos, posters, prints and drawings, embroidery, jigsaw puzzles and mirrors. In deep box frames we frame sports jerseys, medals and other three-dimensional objects.

Canvas prints

5 otázek

What kind of photo do I need for a canvas?

Around 150 DPI at the final size is enough for a canvas, as it is viewed from a greater distance. A photo from a modern mobile phone (12 Mpx) is therefore enough for roughly 70 × 50 cm. We check every photo before printing and will contact you if it is not sufficient for the chosen size.

How large a canvas can you print?

We print Canvas Artist SB II from a roll 152 cm wide. The shorter side of a stretched picture can therefore be up to 140 cm, while the longer side is almost unlimited. We are happy to discuss larger formats individually.

What will the sides of the picture look like?

We always mirror the edges of the picture: the edge of the image is reflected when folded over the side, so the whole picture stays on the front and the edge continues seamlessly. The canvas is wrapped around the sides and fixed at the back, so the picture does not need a frame.

How do I send you my image?

Upload your photo directly in the calculator (JPG, PNG, TIFF or PDF up to 12 MB). Send larger files via a file transfer service such as WeTransfer.

Can a canvas also be framed?

Yes. In the calculator you can choose a floating frame, in which the picture "floats" with a narrow gap from the frame. We will also gladly set the canvas into a classic frame – just let us know.

Printing and file preparation

8 otázek

In what format should I send my files?

Ideally a print-ready PDF (PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4) with 3 mm bleed. We can also handle JPG, TIFF, PSD or EPS formats – in that case, please contact us in advance.

What resolution should images have?

For printed matter at least 250 DPI at actual size; more than 300 DPI will not improve quality. Please send logos and text ideally as vectors.

Why do printed colours differ from the screen?

A monitor emits colours as light (RGB), whereas print builds them from inks (CMYK). Some vivid shades on screen therefore cannot be printed exactly the same. According to prepress (DTP) standards, print files should be in the CMYK colour space, ideally as PDF/X. We also print photos in RGB – for example from a mobile phone or camera – converting them to print colours with the profile of the specific material. However, colour deviations from the screen cannot be claimed for files supplied in RGB or PANTONE. For jobs where exact colour matters (corporate colours, art reproductions), we recommend a proof print.

How can I send you large files?

Attach smaller files to your order or e-mail. Send larger ones via a file transfer service – WeTransfer, Dropbox or Google Drive.

Which materials do you print on?

Digitally on papers up to 350 g/m² (up to 450 g/m² on the C12000) from renowned suppliers, on metallic and natural papers, stickers, transparent films and tracing paper. In large format on canvases, photo papers, fine art papers, films, banners and wallpapers.

What is the largest format you can print?

Digitally up to SRA3+ (325 × 480 mm), long sheets up to 1,300 mm. In large format up to a width of 1,570 mm; the length is limited only by the material roll.

How much do file preparation and graphic design cost?

We charge €52 per hour excl. VAT for converting supplied files into a print-ready PDF without changing the content. We quote the design of a flyer, brochure or catalogue individually according to its scope.

What is the minimum print price?

The minimum price of one job is €16 excl. VAT on the Konica Minolta press and €40 excl. VAT on the Epson large-format printer. It covers the preparation of the machine and material.
